Question: To Doubt Something

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.  (Genesis 3:6 ESV)

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT)

When I browsed Genesis, I was surprised that the first question in Scripture was not posed by God. The first ever question came from the serpent. He cast doubt. He questioned God.

He had the audacity to suggest to Eve: “Did God actually say THAT?”

His leading, accusatory, deceptive question had grave consequences for mankind. The first couple hid from God, after acting on the doubt. God pursued them, with his “Where are you?” grace. And later offered His very own Son to redeem us from the knowledge of good and evil.

But I want to pause and think about this misleading question rooted in jealousy and deceit. How does this type of question get me into similar trouble? And how does God’s grace get me out of it?

Maybe there isn’t a hissing snake suggesting that I should doubt God. But do I ever entertain such questions as: “Are you sure, God?” or “Where are you, God?”  or “Why didn’t You prevent this painful situation?”

Doubts and questions are part of our existence. But how can they lead us back to God, instead of further away?

And when, I am tempted or tested, how can I respond? How will I know the way out that God provides? Like Jesus, I can recall God’s promises and truth in particular situations. (See Luke 4:1-13)

It’s not easy, but redirecting our doubting thoughts to a trusting heart is what God desires. He enables us by asking His Spirit to bring to mind His love, grace and truth.

How can questions draw you closer to God?

  1. Firstly, isn’t it a wonderfully comforting thing to know that God does not shun us when we come to Him openly with our questions. In fact, He welcomes it. To be in such close communion through the power of His Spirit! And the fact that all that power lives within us, to help us overcome. We must take that moment of intense temptation to cry out to God, and see Him work on our behalf. And this is what draws us closer–remembering all the times He has come through for us in the past. This is where journalling really helps too–written testament to His faithfulness throughout the years!
I find it interesting that the enemy tempted Jesus with all the kingdoms of the earth in Luke 4. I know satan has full-range of this earth right now, as then, but in the end, it ALL belongs to the Father. satan was offering all things created to the Very One who was there when GOD created it all in the beginning.
And when we are in doubt, grab that Bible, repeat verses and passages geared to our situation, and PRAY. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Submit to Him. Resist the devil and he will flee. (James 4) This is the essence of spiritual warfare.

    1. Jillie- I love all your insights. God welcomes us and our questions. He longs for us to cry out to him. And he knows we are in this spirtual battle and he gives us everything we need to stand firm!

  2. Jillie, I just love seeing you here. You’re in the right place, and you will love all Kel;’s wisdom, and she, yours!

    1. Ah shucks, Lynni.
I remember you directing me to Kel’s blog some time ago and I just kept forgetting to subscribe. I’m so glad I now have! I am in the right place! I always thought Kel was too “artsy” for me, but just Saturday, I found myself cutting & pasting in a journal–maybe there’s hope for me yet?! I even plan to do some sketching in the margins of important entries! AND, I recently tried my hand at a couple of poems, even though I’ve never been into poetry! Have always thought my daughter got ALL the “creative genes” from my mother, but maybe, just maybe there’s some hope for me yet. And yes, Kel’s wisdom and insights are amazing!

  3. I had to smile when you said that Kel is too artsy. Yes, she has amazing artisitic and creative insights and has just taken off to the stratosphere with her art-jouranilng and collaging, but when I think of “too artsy” I think somehow of unapproachabilty and a bit of arrogance. Kel is a free spirit with a wonderful “comfortableness” about her. She makes one feel fery much at home. She’s loving, patient, kind, and very understanding. Yes, you will be right at home iin her corner of the blogosphere. I’m thrilled that you have tried collaging. Did you read about how I started doing it? Maybe Kel will pull up that link here (I’m not sure how to find it), and certainly I started it kicking and screaming. but now my mentor Kathleen ADams (who taught me all I know about journal faciliaiton) ssays that I am her Collaging Poster Child! =] I think you will find it extremely therapeutic, insightful, and yes, God-honoring if/when you do it unto him. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
    Love
    Lynni
Oh and poetry! Yes! I was a Johnny-come-lately to that, too, and now I love it. Have you tried alpha poems?

Also, do you have FB? I’m on that now, and would love to see you thre.

    1. Have to say, Lynni, that I never thought (“artsy”) Kel would be unapproachable or arrogant. I’ve only ever seen one big heart for others in her words, her poetry, her artwork. And yes, there is a great “comfortableness” about her. Someone who is open and honest and welcoming. [Don’t you love it, Kel, that we’re discussing YOU on YOUR blog?!?]

Alas Lynni, I am not on Facebook. Sorry. The people I know always seem to get themselves in trouble using FB, and I can make enough trouble all by myself. 🙂

      1. Jillie, i call this good gossip, but we’re just letting Kel and her readers in on it! She is surely open and lovely and welcoming. And funny how we each can have different connotations of words in our minds, which is why we have to really dialogue sometimes to understand meaning. As for FB, I agree w/ you in principle, and have totally shied away from it (w/ michael’s strong encouragement to do so). I orig. got an account to enter a writing contest years ago (the price of entry) but never used it, and then did again to enter Michelle’s writing contest. So I decided to give it a go, realizing if I ever officially write again, I will likely need it. I was surprised that I actually h ave kind of enjoyed it, though, wow, one really needs to monitor the time. And i’m flying by the seat of my pantyhose, not exactly knowing what I am doing. I think if you are prudent in what you say, then it wont come back to haunt you. I heard good counsel on the news last night. where a professor said, whatever you write online, imagine it on the front page o f a newspaper or lead story in a news cast. If you are comfortable w/ that, then go ahead and post. REally made me think. Nothing you put online, even here at friendly Kel’s, can be taken back. Of course, Kel, all was say about you is good and truthful, and I would not take it back in a nanosecond!a

  4. I totally enjoyed this discussion…y’all are so kind and I am glad you read and are encouraged by the words served up here and it amazes me that a comfortable atmosphere can be felt at a blog, which is my heart’s desire in all I do, say and the places I interact…thanks for all the kudos!

I love a dialogue. Be the first to start a discussion!
