So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6 ESV)
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT)
When I browsed Genesis, I was surprised that the first question in Scripture was not posed by God. The first ever question came from the serpent. He cast doubt. He questioned God.
He had the audacity to suggest to Eve: “Did God actually say THAT?”
His leading, accusatory, deceptive question had grave consequences for mankind. The first couple hid from God, after acting on the doubt. God pursued them, with his “Where are you?” grace. And later offered His very own Son to redeem us from the knowledge of good and evil.
But I want to pause and think about this misleading question rooted in jealousy and deceit. How does this type of question get me into similar trouble? And how does God’s grace get me out of it?
Maybe there isn’t a hissing snake suggesting that I should doubt God. But do I ever entertain such questions as: “Are you sure, God?” or “Where are you, God?” or “Why didn’t You prevent this painful situation?”
Doubts and questions are part of our existence. But how can they lead us back to God, instead of further away?
And when, I am tempted or tested, how can I respond? How will I know the way out that God provides? Like Jesus, I can recall God’s promises and truth in particular situations. (See Luke 4:1-13)
It’s not easy, but redirecting our doubting thoughts to a trusting heart is what God desires. He enables us by asking His Spirit to bring to mind His love, grace and truth.
How can questions draw you closer to God?
