Back to Questions

When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:8-9)

Last week, when I was mulling over the question of a theme for November, I landed on a quest of questions. My mind inquired, “What is the first question in Scriptures?”

I immediately thought of God asking Adam, “Where are you?” And this was the first question God ever asked of man. And I think He continues to ask the same question today:

Where are you?

A simple, three word question which can be translated in various ways:

Am I drifting? Am I hiding? Am I sheltered? Am I wandering? Am I lost? Am I found? Am I near? Am I afraid? Am I secure? Am I home?

Just a simple question. Will I answer?

How about you? How will you answer God’s first question?

  1. I would say to the Lord, “I have been drifting. I have been wandering. I have been trying to hide from You, surrounded by what comes easier, what is comfortable, what carries no cost to me. I have been content with far less than You. And I feel it, the loss of communion. I am convicted of late through all the voices You’ve been sending to speak into my heart. I thank You for Your faithfulness to me, even when I am unfaithful. You are doing a new thing in my heart…and I am grateful. I am moving back, nearer my God to Thee…where I belong.”

    1. Jillie- What a brave and honest confession…answering God’s question draws us back to Him…Hallelujah!

  2. I would have to say, “I am here, holding by my fingernails.” I have someone in my life that chooses to be away from the Lord and His house. When I am with like-minded believers, I feel closer to You than when I am with this person. Please help me.”

    1. Cecelia- Isn’t it good to know that God knows where we are at in a particular situation and that we can cry out freely: Please help me! God sees you and knows what you are facing and He loves that you enjoy being in His presence with like-minded believers!
