And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. (Luke 2:12ESV)
But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. (Luke 24:12 ESV)
When I think that God promises me that I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ, it seems too extravagant.
When I think that Jesus clothed himself in flesh, I marvel at His humility.
At His birth, He was swaddled in cloths. He wore the garb of a rabbi. He used a towel to wash dirty feet. Soldiers gambled for His last garment. He was wrapped in burial cloths, which were found in the empty tomb laid with care.
When I think that God clothed me with His love, it seems too lavish .
What do you think of the clothing of God?
I think of when He was stripped of His clothing and hung naked on the Cross in shame and humiliation. Most paintings depict Jesus with some kind of loin cloth, but I’m thinking He was completely naked. It’s an unbearable thought that the King of Kings and Lord of Lords should suffer such degradation for you and for me–much less all the horrific pain, suffering, and abandonment from God.
Yes, Our Lord Jesus did the hard part, so we could be set free!
