And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:23-24 ESV)
Unless is “used to say what will happen, be done, or be true if something else does not happen, is not done, or is not true.” (www.m-w.com)
Unless Jesus falls to the ground, is beaten and bruised and pierced in order to hang on the cross and die, we remain alone. Without any possibility of regeneration, unless we see that we are the fruit of his death. Unless we are born of water and spirit, we shrivel as up like an un-planted seed. We have no hope of living. Unless we enter the faith like a child, we will not flourish in the Kingdom of God.
Unless God had commanded that the Son of Man be glorified, darkness would have overcome the Light. When I think of the possibilities of what would have happened, unless Jesus was crucified, I tremble.
When I look at the cross, at the crucified Christ, it’s hard to imagine any glory coming from such violence, unless I look past the cross to the fruitfulness of an empty tomb, which gives way to an abundance of possibilities.
