Seek the Lord while you can find him.
Call on him now while he is near.

Imagine my surprise this morning, when I passed the kitchen counter and saw this little guy staring at me. I proceeded to make my coffee. And then I noticed this one.
While I sat sipping my coffee, rehearsing the day’s tasks with my hubby, I burst out laughing and I pointed to the top of our fridge.
When our boys were younger, I would try to come up with great April Fool’s Day jokes. I usually got them with the common one: “You’re shoe’s untied!” And they would look. As a child, one year I was quite mischievous, and put salt in the sugar bowl. I am sure my dad didn’t quite get the joke.
These little faces were just what we needed today. Our grown son had placed them around the kitchen in the middle of the night.
We are in the midst of an unexpected loss (my husband’s father was called home to God through a heart attack this past week), so my son’s humor alleviated our grief for a bit.
When I face hard situations, I often quote “His ways are not my ways” to myself and others. I read it in context recently, and I noticed that God’s forgiveness is the subject of this passage. His ways are not our ways. He generously forgives. He doesn’t frown and withhold and make my life unbearable. He alleviates my pain with the ludicrous sacrifice of His innocent Son!
And then Father God goes further, He gives us gifts of the Spirit and the ability to overcome our fruitless ways. He lives his fruitfulness through us.
Here’s a prayer that my six year old niece loves to read to us based on Galatians 5:22-23:
Spirit of God
put love in my life.
Spirit of God
put joy in my life.
Spirit of God
put peace in my life.
Spirit of God
make me patient.
Spirit of God
make me kind.
Spirit of God
make me good.
Spirit of God
give me faithfulness.
Spirit of God
give me humility.
Spirit of God
give me self-control.

And when she finishes, my eight year old nephew says:
You know what’s missing from that list, Aunt Kel?
And I say: What?
And he says: Humor!
Yes, humor is a gift of the Spirit, too! As we experience the common griefs of life, the uncommon joy of the Lord brings comfort and relief. Even the little humors of an April Fool’s day!
