Rest: Peace of Mind or Spirit

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

(Matthew 11:28-30 The Message)

As I continue this strange Advent{ure} of not “feeling” the holiday spirit, nor gleaning any narrative revelations from the nativity story, both common places where I normally reside during Advent, I wonder what God wants from me.

In a moment of seasonal apathy, I asked that exact question to God this morning. “What do you WANT from me, God?” In response, I thought I heard Him say, “Nothing.” And then a pause. “I have everything.” And in that instant, I knew that I was asking the wrong question. So then, I rephrased my question, “What do you want FOR me, God?” And the Spirit, ever so gently replied, “Rest.”

And this rest is not just ceasing activity, but a real peace of mind. The peace of mind that says, “It’s okay to put aside traditions.” or “Read the book of Isaiah, instead of Luke and Matthew to see the Savior in a fresh light.”

In what ways has God been inviting you to rest this Advent season?

  1. I find my rest by all my shopping being done by Black Friday. I make most of my gifts and it gives me time to snuggle by the tree and read a book, make cards, knit or watch a Christmas movie. When I don’t have to think of gift giving and just relax in December it helps me to focus re on Jesus

  2. Lesley- I love your idea to finish shopping early, as shopping does take away from my energy…ah to watch a Christmas movie…my favorite is the Grinch Who Stole Christmas! I am enjoying my time with Jesus even in the midst of Christmas preparations! See you soon!

  3. Kel, when you read my blogpost this week, you’ll notice a familiar theme. I think a LOT of people have been sensing what you have…..Rest in Him. Amen!

    1. Jody- I love when God does themes in the body of Christ…I’m going over to read now 🙂 Rest is so needed…how did I get so weary? I think it comes from just living in this world, right?

I love a dialogue. Be the first to start a discussion!
