My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God?Psalm 42:2 NRSV
Have you ever noticed that every Christmas seems to have its own personality? Some years beckon me exuberantly. Other years, I get distracted by the hustle and bustle. This year finds me slowly warming up to the season. Even though there is a dusting of snow on the ground and some of my decorations are out, it doesn’t feel like the holidays yet.
The Santa on the table came out of his box with his hand raised in the air, beckoning me in a way. Reminds me of my favorite scene from The Muppet Christmas Carol, where the spirit of Christmas Present, a jovial red-haired giant invites Ebenezer Scrooge to “Come in and get to know me better, mon!” Maybe that’s what I am waiting for; an invitation to seek the face of God.
If I had to describe the personality of this year’s Advent{ure} so far, it would be mystery all wrapped up in a quiet longing for more. I want to follow the slower pace, enter in and move closer to the One who loves me completely.
What beckons you this holy season?
